Days
1-2: Arrive
Delhi and transfer to your hotel. On Day 2 your morning sightseeing
of Old Delhi includes Jama Masjid (Shah Jahan’s great mosque)
& Chandni Chowk. In the afternoon continue to New Delhi to
visit the mighty Qutb Minar, the unique lotus shaped Bahai Temple,
India Gate and the Sikh Temple at Bangla Sahib. In the evening
transfer to the station for the overnight train to Varanasi.
Days 3-4: On
arrival there is time to freshen up in the hotel before visiting
one of the most sacred sites of Buddhism – Sarnath, where
the Buddha gave his first sermon and which has long been a center
of Buddhist art and teaching. Known as the City of Light, founded
by Shiva, Varanasi is India’s most sacred city and literally
thousands gather daily to bathe in the waters of the holy mother
Ganges – a dawn boat ride is the best way to watch the city
come to life. In the evening discover something of traditional
Indian music by the main ghat.
Days
5-6: The flight to Khajuraho leaves the afternoon
free for your own explorations of the town. The following day
spends a full-day exploring the various groups of these resplendent,
and immaculately restored, temples. Built between the 10th and
12th centuries they are famed for their sensuality and eroticism
reflecting the tantric Hindu tradition.
Day 7: Orchha combines
the peaceful essence of village life with crumbling tombs and
Rajput palace ruins on a river island – with a dash of wildlife
thrown in – black-faced langurs, vultures and parakeets.
Days 8-9: Morning
drive to Agra, stopping en-route visit the imposing fort at Gwalior.
Dawn is the best time to visit India’s most iconic monument
- the Taj Mahal, regarded as one of the Wonders of the World,
built by Emperor Shahjahan in pure white marble in memory of his
beloved Mumtaz Mahal.
Days
10-11: Drive to Jaipur, en-route visits Fatehpur
Sikri, a city built in red sandstone by Emperor
Akbar to commemorate the birth of his son and Keoladeo
Bird Sanctury (Bharatpur). Take a morning excursion to Amber Fort
- Palace of the Kuchchawa rulers. In the afternoon visit Pink
City which includes Hawa Mahal : the palace of winds (Photo-stop),
Jantar Mantar : the observatory on stone and the City Palace Museum
which contains the original collection of the Maharajas of Jaipur.
Days 12-13:Head
for the open air art gallery of Rajasthan - Shekahawati. This
desert region is full or ornately decorated Havelis, built during
the days of the great camel caravans. Spend the afternoon visiting
the Havelis and admiring the walls richly decorated with high
quality frescoes – spending the night in one recently renovated
Haveli and sampling a traditional Rajasthani dinner. Late afternoon
on Day 13 return to Delhi.
Day 14: Depart
